"Structure"
While designing a wooden I-beam structure for another box I realized the I-beams would make great legs for a new box design. The design of "Structure" shortly followed.
I wanted "structure" to have a very mechanical look. The main body is constructed of Honduras Rosewood. Curly maple was used to cap it off top and bottom. I wanted it to look as if
the curly maple was a sleeve that went all the way through the box. I milled a channel on all four sides, where the legs would mount, to create a shadow line for the legs. The lid and
bottom of the box are created from Honduras Rosewood also. The lid insert is Birdseye Maple. The bottom of the box is held on using a floating panel joint.
The legs are made from Curly Maple. The 45 degree chamfer on the legs lines up perfectly with the edge of the main body of the box. That was done by carefully controlling the length
of the black walnut dowels used to attach the legs.
"Structure" is 8" x 8" x 6.5". It was finished with three soakings of Danish Oil followed by two buffs of BriWax.
